I did a Panda active scan and it found one adawar that gave reference to the following link.

http://www.pandasoftware.com/virus_info ... cion=46160

None of my other programs report anything,MS/as,Ad-Aware,Spybot S/D,AVG,SG.

This is the Panda scan report:

Incident Status Location

Adware:adware/searchexe No disinfected Windows Registry

I did a check with JV16 power tools "registry find
'and it shows nothing.

This is the latest HJT log.

Frank I can't find anything via Google that does not give a specific location for that infection, as in a file assosciated with what its telling you. Several others I found point to a couple of different infections. Without a location its hard to pinpoint what its finding, if its anything.

Lets do this, DL and run CCleaner.

It will clean out alot of junk residing in your temp files and folders. Have it remove all it finds.

Try out another registry tool, Reg Seeker. Before running the tool, be sure and have the 'back up before deletion' box ticked.

Then run the Panda scan again, see what, if anything it finds.

It doesn't hurt to get a 'second' opinion, much in the same way we tell users to use more than one anti-spyware app.

The apps listed are free of course, so its just a matter of some time.

I downloaded Ccleaner and ran it.
Now I downloaded RegSeeker to a folder I named regseeker on my C:drive. It has been running for about twenty minutes and nothing is happening, all I see is the STOP button but no kind of progression bar.At this point I do not know if it is working.

Thats not really too bad, I have found boxes with well over 1000 entries. Remove them all, there is a back created, just in case.(highly unlikely)

Once thats done, reboot your box and re-reun the Panda scan, see what it finds.

Well, if it was a file, we could fix it, but its just giving you a general discription, so that proves a bit more difficult.

Let me look around some more to se if I can find anything else regarding this finding.

OK, lets try a couple of things.

I'd like you to manually go thru your system, and delete\empty all your temp files and folders. In many cases by using tools some files get left behind.

Lets also empty your recyle bin.

I'm still coming up with no spcific answer to this, but would certainly love to find it.

Still looking. Eyes cross-eyed, time for sleep.

Yes, like that one and any other you may find, as in:
C:\DOCUMENTSandSETTINGS\YOUR NAME\LOCALSETTINGS\Temp

And here is a link which will explain some more:
http://www.personal-computer-tutor.com/ ... pfiles.htm

And I would do so for each user account as well. for that matter, run the other cleanup tools also, for any other accounts. Most of those tools don't go into other accounts.

Hi Frank :)

TeMerc asked me to have a look here.
Panda not giving details on registry location doesn't help much...we'll have to look around a bit.

(hope you don't mind me poppin in TeMerc :) )

Can I see 3 other logs from you please?:

Program list:

Open Hijackthis, click "open misc tools section", click "open Uninstall manager", click "save list..." (generates Uninstall_list.txt)
Save the list somewhere and post it here please.

Click the "Back" button beside "save list.." to get back to main options screen.
Check both options beside "generate startup list log" then generate the log, hit "yes".
Post contents of log that pops up in notepad.

Then....

Download Silent Runners from here:

http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.vbs

Save the file to the desktop, double click it.
Answer NO to the first prompt.
Let it run. It will dissapear during scan.
Once done it will tell you and drop a log on desktop that begins with the name of "Startup Programs".
Post contents of the log here.

**Notes

If your antivirus warn you of possible malicious script...please allow it to run. It is not malicious; its just a scan tool.

It may take 2 posts to get all 3 logs in.

Thanks :)

It may be later on tomorrow before I can reply...I have a big job to do tomorrow and I don't know how long it's going to take.

Hi Frank;

Sorry for delay. I had to go out of town for a bit.

Nothing alarming in those logs you posted.

Lets go with this:

Please disable SpywareGuard, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after we're done.
To disable SpywareGuard:

Right click the running icon of Spywareguard, it will open the program.
Then go to Menu, file, exit.
Then confirm the program is closed.

Also please disable your SpySweeper.

Start Hijackthis, run system scan and check:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://my.myway.com/
<--(assuming you didn't set this)

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
<--If you didn't set these O6 entries with spybot or spysweeper; fix both of them. Otherwise leave.

Once above entries are checked; close all open windows and hit "fix checked"

Restart computer, allow changes detected by SpywareGuard & SpySweeper if any alerts.

If you cannot connect to internet after fixing above....please do the following:

Reset web settings:
Start Microsoft Internet Explorer. (ignore the 404 page not found errors)
In Internet Explorer, click Tools, then Internet Options.
Click the Programs tab -> Reset Web Settings> OK.

Reset Proxy
Do you connect to the internet normally through a Proxy Server?
If not, you will probably have to reset Proxy settings in order to connect to the internet after fixing the above.

For dial-up:
Open Internet options in control panel
Click connections tab
Click on your connection and settings, then uncheck "use proxy server"
Apply and ok the changes.

For LAN/Cable:
Open Internet options in control panel
Click connections tab
Click LAN settings
Uncheck "use proxy server"
Apply and ok the changes.

That should take care of it.

Rescan at Panda and see if that searchexe entry shows up still.
Please also post a fresh hijackthis log and let me know how things are running.

Thanks :)

Hi

glad to hear :)

I'm willing to bet it was one of the blank IE entries that was triggering panda result.

I missed one entry in your log. Not malware but broken Google toolbar. Looks like you decided on MSN toolbar instead.
You can have HJT fix this entry to clean up remanents:

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - (no file)

You can fix this entry as well if you didn't set it with spybot:

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present

Did you uninstall SpySweeper? Or was this a trial that just ran out?
I no longer see it running, or its startup entry and the service file appears to be missing.

LMK about spysweeper and we'll clean up its leftovers. :)

Blender,
Yes,I did uninstall spysweeper and it was the trial version,TeMerc suggested to use it to try solving the Panda problem.
I just removed the HJT entries you suggested.

Thank You

Hi

Looking better all the time. :)

I just wanted to make sure you uninstalled SpySweeper and not something else.
Things look pretty clean.
You can have Hijackthis fix this entry:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: WRNotifier - WRLogonNTF.dll (file missing)

It is just a leftover entry from SpySweeper.

Reboot once it has been fixed.
Rescan with HJT and see if it stays gone. LMK.

Note on those registry cleaners. Be darn careful with them. They scare the hell out of me! (and I feel I have a fair good handle on registry)
I have lost 2 of my systems allowing it to delete everything it found as 'illegal' or 'unneeded'.
Once resulted in total format and another time system restore brought it back.
Unless you know exactly what those apps are removing I would side on caution.
I have looked at a few cleaners and some of the stuff they think should be removed blows my mind.
Make restore point before using any reg cleaner.
After cleaner run and reboot make sure all your desired programs run right and windows runs right. ie:

Can you access everything in control panel?
Start menu work right?
system "feel right"?
Folders have no drastic changes such as bunch of buttons/menu items "missing"?

So many things...

Almost all reg cleaners make backups you can restore but if you cant even boot up machine....you cannot access that backup.
"last known good" is what you are looking at.

To be honest it would take literally thousands of 'unneeded' entries to slow system down noticably.
Every machine is different and no reg cleaner can determine 100% for sure what is safe to remove.

I don't knock those cleaners totally as many many people have very good results with em.
Just use caution is all.

K...enough ranting on reg cleaners...:)

Few apps & tips I recommend for future protection:

Check your IE security settings:

  1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  2. Click once on the Security tab
  3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  4. Click once on the Custom Level button.

    1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Now on to protection/prevention

I recommend:

You have done some of the following but never hurts to check.

 IE-Spyad <--this puts several thousand sites in restricted zone for IE. If you happen on a site within its list they can't hijack you or install anything.
Program is free and updated about once a month.

Please follow readme instructions for install...it is a little different.

Single user PC use IE-Spyad1
Multi user PC use IE-Spyad2

 Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

You may not like TeaTimer cus of the duel alerts by it and MS/AS but it also monitors deletions.

 Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

 Spywareblaster <--this prog blocks known bad active x controls, many tracking cookies and puts more sites in restricted zone.
Install> update> enable all protection.
Updates are about once a month and is free.

 Spywareguard This program watches for any changes to your home/search pages for IE. If something (including you) tries to make changes, you will be alerted with a popup giving you the option to keep change or revert to previous settings.
Install> update. It should prompt you to start the program
Takses little resorces and is also free.

 Using a hosts file will greatly increase security. Many of those flashy annoying ads on websites will not display and it blocks access to thousands of sites entirely.

Info and how to install:

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

 Keep a firewall running at all times.

 Remember to keep up with your windows updates including office.

 Remember to keep your antivirus up to date.

 Keeping all your security up to date

 IE settings for increased security

 Confused which antispyware is good or bad?

 Install an alternative browser for day to day surfing.
These 2 are free and have alot less security issues than IE:

Opera Browser

FireFox Browser

Might come in handy too if something breaks IE.

 And finally...more security reading..: Protect your Computer

Not quite finally...: (I say a week here cus of those reg cleaners)
None of the infected files stored in system restore can hurt you unless you actually use an infected restore point.
Much rather restore to infected state than borked computer.

After about i'd say a week & several reboots and checking to see that all is well; it is highly recommended to reset your system restore to remove any possible backed up infected files there.

Right click "my computer"
Click "properties"
Click "system restore" tab
Checkmark "turn off system restore"
Hit apply> ok> ok.

Reboot

Go back and turn system restore back on by removing the check, hit apply, and OK.

A new restore point is created at this time.
You will not be able to restore computer to any earlier than today.

********************************

Happy surfing! :D

Feel free to add anything if you like TeMerc :)

Hi

Sorry I took long to get back. Had a few problems myself including but not limited to:
Blown power supply
No Internet
No power for several hours due to bad storm.
Long work hours...

Anyhow I'm back up & running.
Log looks good.
You might find you get double alerts if something tries to change home page, etc with both MS/AS and TeaTimer running.
If you find it creates a conflict I would disable the teatimer.

TeMerc also has a pile more info here:

Stay safe! :)

Well, thanks for dropping in to take care of this one Tammy, tho, as it turns out, there really wasn't anything major wrong, which is good.

The Panda thing most likely ws picking up the about:blank entry, as you noticed, I had not thought of that.

Frank your box should remain all secure now with all the security installed.

Be sure and read some of my testing which I did with a couple of different configurations.

Glad we were able to get that figured out.

Of course feel free to post any other questions about anything else.
