Greedy Vendors Who Install Unwanted 'Extras' [Apr 28]

Postby TeMerc » Mon Mar 10, 2008 11:10 am

Rather than come up with a catchy phrase as I was going to do, I decided on this one, more to the point, don't you think?

This thread is going to document vendors who fail the users that serve them by getting greedy and adding toolbars from third party vendors solely to increase their bottom line. It is more or less, depending on contribution here a mirror of our sister site Calendar of Updates thread.

You can find images of the installs in that thread. Users here feel free to post any new finds here and if you're not a member at COU, I'll transfer the images to their Installers Hall Of Shame thread

Currently listed:
  • Shockwave Image Norton Security Scan
  • Flash Image Google toolbar
  • CCleaner ImageYaHoo! toolbar but offers version without one
  • Daemon Tools Lite
  • Nero Burning Rom Image Ask.com toolbar
  • PC Tools Firewall Plus ImageGoogle toolbar

Some more greedy vendors here, info grabbed from the COU thread:
  • Apple using iTunes update to auto-install Safari <<<this one causing huge ripples all over
  • Shockwave for Firefox browser will offer Google Toolbar and it pre-checked
  • DivX installer/updater will offer Yahoo! Toolbar and it is pre-selected
  • Bit comet offers the Google tool bar which is checked by default
  • Spyware Doctor Google toolbar now and this is the default
  • Winamp 5 Full 5.53 toolbar + MP3 downloads, default selection
  • Crawler Tool bar 5.1 comes pre checked with the software along with web guard. Now the big problem with this software is that the the range of tool bars are only offered once Spy ware Terminator is installed. It goes straight in to the install mode once you click on the license. It doesn't even give you the Chance to see where the files will be installed so be very careful with this software

Sorry to disagree here. IMHO, there is a big difference between a vendor who does NOT inform the user, this forcing unwanted extras - from that of a vendor who clearly displays, informs, and requests permission to have the extras installed.

If users are TOO quick to click away ((O , then the blame is clearly with them. I'm using several of the mentioned products (WITHOUT the EXTRAS) and the programs work fine, Mindblower! [-]

On this note just this morning I installed a new version of YaHoo! IM.

Much to my chagrin, the toolbar and 'browser services' were default ticked, naturally I unticked each. hedbngr

Imagine my surprise a short while later when Scotty barked about a toolbar and then services being installed!! grgr

They were both force installed!! =+\

Then they also had the upgrade automatically auto installed\preset, but they do give you a note saying you can change the option in preferences which I did.

OK, I had updated Veoh last week and thought I added the info here, but I must have forgotten, it was just before I borked the system, so guess I got distracted.

Anywho, I just installed it and it too has the YaHoo! toolbar which includes 'YaHoo! Search Protection' and a switch to YaHoo! homepage. ((O

But I didn't get any surprises like I got with YIM. So sad as it is to say, we need to give them props for that(?). !!x(

We're now delisting RealPlayer Pat reported there's no more google toolbar and I also tried the installer today.

No more google toolbar other than their usual download Realplayer button which is pre-checked still but not a toolbar and it is needed if user want to download video from webpages.

Then the others is unchecked by default.

New one, called Web Security Guard.

Default install has a search engine change and there are a ton of 'services' but most all are not ticked to install.

BitDefender Joins the Dark Side

The link from the Twitter quote leads to a thread at Wilders Security where member EsoxLucius confirms with a screen capture the inclusion of Ask in the BitDefender product:
    - This is not a masked ask toolbar, it is a BitDefender toolbar with and added search box (in this case ask)

    - No search, browsing habits, browsing history is captured and sent anywhere.

    - The ask.com search box is mentioned in the first step of the installation.

    - The choice regarding what toolbar to use is not mine to make and I can't really say why IAC.
As a result of the inclusion of the Ask search engine in the BitDefender Anti-Phising product, Calendar of Updates (CoU) has discontinued providing update information on BitDefender. (See the CoU list of products with the Ask Toolbar.)
