MySpace has engaged in its fair share of fights over the past few months, battling alleged spammers and fending off lawsuits. Now we're hearing an allegation that the social networking site has been serving ads that hock pesky programs known as "scareware." And rather than call out the big guns, the social networking site is rolling over and playing dead.

The two pieces of offending software, Kingsley said, included WinAntiVirus Pro and DriveCleaner, and he included screen shots - posted here - that appeared to back up his claim. One shot also appears to show a warning from Internet Explorer that winantivirus.com was trying to install a program.

My Space should be shut down. What little good might be there is totally overshadowed by the bad.

Whilst perusing my MySpace account, I clicked the link to my niece's profile from where she got the HTML code for the customizing of the profile.

That took me to mygirlyspace. That site had a banner on it:

Needless to say, I just had to click it

That took me to ads.dropspam.com. It had a red rating from SiteAdvisor

It also wanted me to download a file, which as you can see from the Jotti scan had a couple of extras in it:
File: upgrade_from_mygirly.exe
Status: INFECTED/MALWARE
MD5 0862bdb69fed04863de4f20ae5787a81

Scan taken on 25 Jan 2007 01:39:43 (GMT)
AntiVir Found TR/Dldr.WebHance.DR

BitDefender Found Adware.DropSpam

Dr.Web Found Trojan.DownLoader.4980

F-Prot Antivirus Found W32/Downloader.AXOR

NOD32 Found Win32/Adware.DropSpam application

VBA32 Found Application.Win32.Adware.DropSpam

So, naturally I just had to comment on the SA review section. Even if it was red already I just gave them some proof.

I also posted that the connecting site, should be avoided too.

I'm confused, if it is your MySpace account. Who is she and what HTML?

Opps, my bad. I edited that, it was supposed to read......"I clicked the link to my niece's profile from where she got the HTML code for the customizing of the profile. "

Ohhh my niece has just got back online after being off for a year and a half and she mentioned MySpace right away. I told her to stay away!

Like anything else, it's actually ok, as long as you don't do the same things that would get you into trouble on any other site.
  • click the banner ads
  • buy anything from said banner ads
  • download anything from said banner ads
  • don't allow just anyone as your 'friend'
  • keep the profile free of those 'free code' sites
  • keep profile set to private
  • Never click on bulletin related ads'

Also, if they use hosts file and IE-Spyads, they won't see 99% of those banners, I know I only see them when I disable both, along with all pop up blockers too.

Harmless really.
